Description

2016, the 20th anniversary of the HIPAA statute, was a big year for the HHS Office for Civil Rights and HIPAA regulatory compliance:  OCR marked a record year with respect to HIPAA settlements, launched Phase 2 of HIPAA's permanent audit program, and issued comprehensive policy guidance on topics ranging from the individual's right to health information and ransomware to HIPAA and the cloud and reducing cybersecurity risks.  This session will highlight key HIPAA enforcement and policy developments of 2016, including some preliminary lessons learned from both the audits as well as OCR's HIPAA case investigations, and provide an overview of what stakeholders can expect OCR's Health Information Privacy Division to focus on in 2017.
