Improving Throughout and Decreasing Length of Stay: A Davies Story

Enterprise Davies recipient Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, PA) realized inpatient flow improvements via a Daily Huddle process. This process is supported by a dashboard tool which collates tables and graphs of key hospital performance indicators in real-time, providing the overall ED and hospital census for the day, including anticipating OR and PACU daily volume, discharge orders before 1100, average transport and room cleaning times. LVHN saw a 94% improvement in discharge orders placed by 1100, a 19.2% improvement in patients pulled to the inpatient unit from the Emergency Department, and a 34.3% reduction in intra-unit transfer times. Enterprise Davies recipient NYU Langone utilized a paperless registration process that saved over 93,552 hours of patients time in registration, saving the organization close to $1.7 million in potential costs. The presentation will highlight NYU’s guiding principles for paperless registration, discuss potential barriers, and share lessons learned regarding the project.
