Description

Most best-practice product development companies have implemented a robust idea-to-launch system, like Stage-Gate, and the benefits of such a system for prioritizing resources and reducing project risk have been well documented. Similarly, most software development companies build software release plans on a solid system of capacity planning and enhancement prioritization to ensure they can deliver releases on time and on budget. This presentation will detail how we implemented a robust resource and capacity management process that allows us to match IS capacity to project work. Concurrently, we implemented a Stage-Gate process for project review and prioritization that focuses on project strategic, operational and financial fit. Additional benefits include a very high level of senior leader engagement in project review, robust technical and security review of all projects, and a significant decrease in approved projects.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how healthcare IS departments can implement capacity management to match IS resources to work requests
  • Analyze the Stage-Gate process, its value for project prioritization, and how to adapt the process for healthcare IS departments
  • Assess how combining capacity management with a Stage-Gate process can improve project success
  • Identify how a Stage-Gate process can improve organizational transparency and eliminate the IS “black hole”
