Public health case reporting is required under state law but poses a challenging workflow for busy providers. Using routinely generated laboratory data, we demonstrate how to automatically identify cases of disease and pre-populate case reporting forms to ease workflow burden while improving the completeness of population health surveillance. This technology could support providers and EHR vendors with proposed Stage 3 Meaningful Use criteria.
