Show/Hide Details Add to Outlook Calendar
Description:
This interdisciplinary discussion within the three-tiered "Safety Net" of the physician, the nurse and the pharmacist, will explore errors that can be generated by HIT systems and how the impact on workflow can affect quality.
Whether errors are generated by forcing existing workflow into prevailing systems or by clinicians not understanding workflow and how it relates to electronic systems, all three disciplines are experiencing "near-miss" errors in similar ways and at similar rates. These unintended consequences recently defined as E-iatrogenesis can be associated with any aspect of a comprehensive HIT system and may involve errors of commission or omission.
Additionally, this session will examine the differences between workflow falling on the shoulders of software and the merger of the challenges of moving from a semi-automated or manual system to an automated system.
Speaker Information:
Lyle Berkowitz, MD
Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Medical Director of Clinical Information Systems, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine
Paul Conlon, PharmD, JD
Sr.V.P. Clinical Quality and Patient Safety, Trinity Health
Pamela Griffith, RN, MBA
Director of Applications, UC Irvine Medical Center
Blackford Middleton, MD, MPH, MSc
Clinical Informatics R&D, Partners Healthcare
Objectives:
- Discuss how the introduction of HIT can lead to unintended consequences
- Describe the clinician's role in systems design and implementation to minimize the negative impact of automation
- Review the key aspects of process redesign in a paper world vs. working together in an electronic world
Location:
Convention Center
Room:
304 A-H

(Physician's Symposia) Ambulatory Track: the Medical Home
Sunday, February 24, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Tom Landholt, MD
Show/Hide Details Add to Outlook Calendar
Description:
This session will introduce technology tools in use today that greatly impact a clinic's workflow and the patient experience. Secure messaging, portal strategies and tools inherent in the EHR are beginning to coordinate with each other to provide heretofore-unknown workflows within an ambulatory setting. Applied to disease state management, medical decision making is enhanced not just for the physician, but for the entire staff.
Speaker Information:
Tom Landholt, MD
PatientCare Family Clinic
Objectives:
- Understand the various technology components available for outpatient settings in today's market
- Understand how interfaces and secure messaging enables communications among disparate systems
- Review an example of how a portal strategy can assist in collecting and disseminating information for patients and healthcare providers alike
Location:
Convention Center
Room:
308 D

(Physician's Symposia) In-patient Track: In-Patient Communication
Sunday, February 24, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Peter Greene, MD
Show/Hide Details Add to Outlook Calendar
Description:
Consistent hand-off communication is a Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal, and a high priority for clinicians implementing IT support systems. This session will cover communication issues over the continuum of inpatient care, including the hand off from physician to physician across shifts and from department to department; medication reconciliation, and emergent results communication processes.
Speaker Information:
Peter Greene, MD
CMIO & Dean for Emerging Technologies, Johns Hopkins Medicine
Objectives:
- Describe the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal on Hand-off Communications and the pertinent literature on value of improving hand-off communication
- Identify opportunities to use healthcare IT systems to implement a standardized approach to hand-off communication
- Articulate barriers and potential pitfalls with IT-based hand-off systems
- Describe how handoff communication fits into a larger ideal vision of more efficient and effective inpatient communication
Location:
Convention Center
Room:
308 A-C

Optimizing Clinical Workflows and Improving Patient Outcomes Using Actionable Point-of-Care Clinical Decision Support.
Sunday, February 24, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
John Janas III, MD
Show/Hide Details Add to Outlook Calendar
Description:
Many providers and staff do not utilize clinical decision support systems (CDSS) due to a lack of understanding and misconception of what the process entails. "Alert fatigue," combined with inefficient clinical workflows, often make CDSS appear inappropriate and time consuming. Actionable point-of-care clinical decision support combined with the process of clinical workflow re-engineering can be used to improve quality of care and optimize workflow once these obstacles are overcome. Case presentations and preliminary results of an ongoing study examining provider use of CDSS and its impact on workflow and outcomes will be examined. The "process" of clinical workflow re-engineering will be presented.
Speaker Information:
John Janas III, MD
Clinical Content Consultants, LLC
Objectives:
- Understand the current functionality and application of actionable clinical decision support within the EMR.-Understand the limitations, pitfalls, and obstacles of clinical decision support
- Develop a strategy and "process" for successful clinical workflow re-engineering
- Understand the process of consensus development and will become critical reviewers of clinical decision support and guideline assisted protocols
Location:
Convention Center
Room:
308 D

Optimizing Workflow
Sunday, February 24, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Kevin McEnery, MD
Show/Hide Details Add to Outlook Calendar
Description:
Transition to EMRs can assist physicians and other caregivers in the hospital-based care delivery, but it is only by integrating the MR system with services such as radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy that sustainable workflow efficiency can be realized. Successfully implementing an EMR into the hospital setting involves not only the transition to EMR-based care delivery and documentation, but also changing hospital workflow to best leverage EMR capabilities. Digital dashboards, workflow coordination systems, and optimized physician work-lists are examples of information systems improvements to be discussed in this session.
Speaker Information:
Kevin McEnery, MD
Professor of Radiology , Associate Division Head Diagnostic Imaging - Informatics, Anderson Cancer Center
Objectives:
- Appreciate how mapping of existing workflow can assist in leveraging capabilities of EMR
- Understand how EMR enabled workflow improvements can assist physicians in the in-patient setting
- Learn how computerized workflow enhancements, such as digital dashboards, can improve collaboration between members of the healthcare team
Location:
Convention Center
Room:
308 A-C
