While there is increased recognition of the burden of obesity in the U.S., malnutrition is often overlooked, particularly in acute care settings. The focus will be on presence of malnutrition in individuals, markers for monitoring and how to move forward to improve health outcomes and cost with nutrition care.

• Discuss the physiology of malnutrition as it relates to disease states
• Recognize recommended malnutrition-related diagnostic characteristics used to assess and document nutrition status in adults
• Describe how consistent documentation using structured and un-structured data can identify patients needing nutritional interventions
• Discuss present needs for nutrition inclusion (related to malnutrition) in health information technology
