Press Releases

MEDITECH recently hosted its 15th annual Nurse and Home Care Forum, an event focused on helping clinicians to juggle mounting responsibilities while also strengthening patient/provider relationships.

Noting that nurses observe some 60,000 data points during a typical shift, MEDITECH AVP Cathy Turner explained MEDITECH’s commitment to building solutions that allow patient information to be shared quickly and securely across the continuum of care. She emphasized that the best technologies are those that enable nurses to place patients at the center of care.

“Before we learn how to treat the patient, we learn that what we do is all about the patient — which means making sure we’re caring for the mind, body, and spirit,” said Turner. “That really is the essence of the continuum of care, supporting the patient regardless of where they are in their lives.”

In her opening remarks, Valley Hospital’s VP of Patient Care Services Ann Marie Leichman observed that nurses are in a position to take on important leading roles in the years ahead, adding that nurse practitioners in particular are poised to become “the primary care providers of the future.”

Keynote speaker Judy Murphy, CNO for IBM Global Healthcare, shared her perspectives on the trends in healthcare and how nurses can play a central role in empowering their communities. By forming ongoing partnerships with their patients, Murphy explained, nurses can help change the culture of episodic care and encourage patients to take control of their overall health.

Attendees were also encouraged to network and explore new leadership opportunities in the coming year. Rebecca Love, director of Nurse Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University, stressed that nurses are natural innovators and problem solvers — and that they should use their experience to help inform the next generation of medical technologies.

(Westwood, Mass.) — In what some are calling the biggest technological advancement in the hospital’s history, Canada’s Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Waypoint) is now LIVE with MEDITECH’s 6.1 Electronic Health Record (EHR). After an extensive procurement process that involved hundreds of staff and stakeholders evaluating EHR options, the 301-bed psychiatric hospital located in Penetanguishene, Ontario, partnered with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) in Whitby to implement MEDITECH’s fully-integrated EHR.

“Clinicians, clinical information and IT managers, and other staff agreed MEDITECH had the mental health functional tools, support, and experience required to meet our unique needs,” Vice-President of Corporate Services at Waypoint, Lorraine Smith said. “The ability to integrate and support various Ministry and healthcare reporting requirements were also factors in the final decision.”

Partnership with Ontario Shores

As MEDITECH was already utilized in Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, it paved the way for a future partnership between the two hospitals to launch the 6.1 platform.

“Ontario Shores and Waypoint are proud of our partnership and the shared health information system we have developed together," John Chen, Vice-President, Finance and Support Services at Ontario Shores said. "Through the MEDITECH system, we have been able to maximize the technology to develop and implement common clinical standards and evidence-based practices which leads to enhanced patient outcomes.”

Ontario Shores made significant enhancements to patient care and hospital operations with the introduction of the MEDITECH 6.0 platform back in 2009.

“The goal of an EHR and a partnership with Ontario Shores in particular, was to enhance and standardize clinical care, and advance research using the shared MEDITECH system and a single, shared database,” Waypoint Vice-President of Quality and Practice, Linda Adams said. “Setting a vision to ‘use today’s technology to improve quality and safety for patients and staff through a collaborative and interactive experience’ helped us keep an eye on what we wanted to accomplish with this transformation.”

To ensure effective and efficient use of resources in alignment with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Health Information System (HIS) Renewal Strategy, Waypoint teamed up with Ontario Shores to form an HIS partnership with MEDITECH. Ontario Shores was the first hospital in Canada and the first mental health hospital in the world to receive the prestigious HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 award for having a completely paperless health information system.

“Our partnership with Ontario Shores and the support from MEDITECH was instrumental in the transition we had to the new system. We can’t thank them enough,” Waypoint President and CEO, Carol Lambie said. “Waypoint is excited about the many opportunities that an EHR brings to the field of mental health research. Using this technology will help improve patient outcomes, ensure our healthcare professionals have the most up-to-date and accurate information all in one place, and improve communication among doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and the rest of the care team; all helping us deliver even safer care.”

Go-LIVE a Success

Waypoint took a phased approach to implementation starting in Nov. 2015 and culminating with both inpatient and outpatient programs being LIVE by May 2017.

“MEDITECH’s launch at Waypoint was completed in three phases in each of the three clinical divisions, and thanks to a great team and the commitment of our front-line staff, we have had a smooth transition,” Director of Clinical Informatics at Waypoint, Jeannie Borg said. “Our Regional programs were the first to go-LIVE in February and it only took days for staff to recognize the benefits of a paperless system, including more efficient readmission and documentation processes.”

“MEDITECH is committed to providing our customers the specialized tools that serve the unique needs of behavioral healthcare organizations,” Associate Vice President of Marketing at MEDITECH, Christine Parent said. “Waypoint and Ontario Shores are leading the way in delivering exemplary mental healthcare to patients, and we are proud to partner with these organizations by providing a robust and integrated EHR to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.”

Serving customers in Canada since 1981, MEDITECH is the leading EHR vendor in the country with 589 facilities. The MEDITECH EHR is also installed in seven out of ten provinces as well as in two of three territories. For the third year in a row, MEDITECH was ranked in the Best in KLAS: Software & Services report. MEDITECH's 6.x platform received 2017 Best in KLAS for Community HIS and was also rated 2017 KLAS Category Leader for Patient Accounting & Patient Management (Community Hospital) and Global Acute Care EMR - Canada.

(Westwood, Mass.) — As part of their mission to "Elevate the Standard of Healthcare" in their community, Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital (OVSH) announced they will be implementing MEDITECH’s Web Acute Electronic Health Record (EHR) early next year. Located in Springfield, Ohio, the physician-owned, high volume and award-winning hospital was established to provide outstanding surgical and medical care in an environment of personalized service.

“At OVSH, our physicians, nurses and staff are dedicated to delivering high quality patient care,” Craig Terrell, CIO at OVSH said. “We asked all EHR vendors in the vetting process to answer these three questions: tell us what your system was like three years ago, tell us where it is today, and tell us where you’re going,” Terrell said. “MEDITECH was the only vendor to release products after ARRA—that’s huge. It tells us that MEDITECH is a partner that will continue to research, develop, and work with us to enhance our EHR over the years.”

MEDITECH’s one patient, one record strategy eliminates the extra documenting hospital staff does on paper. Currently at OVSH, data is entered multiple times in different systems, leading to duplicate data entry and a more time-consuming pre-registration, surgery, and discharge processes.

“We are really looking forward to streamlining our workflows,” Terrell said. “With MEDITECH, there will be no workarounds. The system is also customizable; it enables us to build the screens that work best for our organization.”

Automation with an electronic chart can help to alleviate human error, leading to safer patient care. This is why Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital found it important to invest in a solution and company that continues to innovate and transform healthcare.

“When we were evaluating EHRs, we ranked the key factors, including: price, implementation, ease of use for our physicians, accounting and revenue cycle. Clinical data integrity and flow carried the most weight, however, and the MEDITECH EHR was the way to go.”

MEDITECH has seen strong growth in new customer bookings over the past several quarters, and the company signed five new healthcare organizations representing 16 more hospitals in Q1 2017.

The innovative, physician-designed Web Electronic Health Record represents a major pivot for MEDITECH and the industry as a whole. Since its launch, over 130 healthcare organizations have signed for this latest release.

"MEDITECH has 47 years of experience in the healthcare industry, and to this day we're deeply committed to delivering solutions that can help physicians deliver the highest quality care to their patients," said Helen Waters, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing.

"We’ve channeled our experience, passion, and knowledge into building this next-generation EHR. The architecture, user interface, and depth of clinical sophistication have been taken to entirely new levels, and as a result, we are seeing a lot of excitement across the market."

New and existing MEDITECH clients are citing the system’s design, usability, integration, mobility, and cost as major deciding factors during their EHR product and vendor evaluation.

Some of MEDITECH's recent Web EHR signings include:

Appalachian Regional Healthcare (Lexington, KY)

After launching a complete evaluation of EHR solutions, Appalachian Regional announced their new partnership with MEDITECH. The large, not-for-profit, integrated delivery network that includes 11 hospitals will begin their shift to MEDITECH's transformative, mobile Web EHR later this year.

"We are excited to partner with MEDITECH for an innovative Web EHR that fosters and supports sustainability," said President and CEO Joe Grossman. "With the Web EHR, our clinicians will have seamless integration across the continuum, improved productivity, and sophisticated tools to improve the quality and safety of care delivered to our communities."

Southlake Regional Health Centre and Stevenson Memorial Hospital (Ontario, Canada)

As members of the Shared Health Information Network Exchange (SHINE) initiative, Southlake Regional Health Centre and Stevenson Memorial Hospital announced a collaboration with Markham Stouffville Hospital to integrate their Health Information System (HIS) and accelerate the adoption of MEDITECH's 6.1 Web EHR across all three organizations.

"MEDITECH brings a wealth of experience that helps solidify all three organizations through the same EHR platform," said Stevenson President and CEO Jody Levac.

"This particular project allows us to address the disparities that occur in small to rural hospitals. Many of our patients can't access specialists or consultants. A single EHR across the three institutions will allow our patients to get access to high-quality care that could never be possible without this type of partnership."

Howard County Medical Center (St. Paul, NE)

A customer since 2011, the Critical Access Hospital will be upgrading to MEDITECH's Web EHR. Physicians at Howard County were impressed with the platform's ease of use and integration.

"We value our physicians' opinions, and they played a significant role in the decision to move forward with MEDITECH's Web EHR,” said CEO Arlan Johnson. “Having access to data from anywhere in the medical center and on any smart device is really what caught everyone's attention.”

WESTWOOD, Mass. — MEDITECH, a Contributor Member of CommonWell Health Alliance, is set to offer CommonWell interoperability services in early 2018. The deployment will enable healthcare organizations to exchange patient information seamlessly for improved patient care and quality outcomes.

CommonWell Health Alliance was formed to develop and deploy a vendor-neutral platform that enables providers to accurately and securely access patients' data regardless of where care takes place. As a Contributor Member of the Alliance, MEDITECH has the opportunity to help steer the future direction of CommonWell and provide its clients access to services that go beyond one EHR system, one healthcare organization, and one community; enabling nationwide connectivity and interoperability.

"Advancing interoperability initiatives has always been a cornerstone of MEDITECH's healthcare IT vision," said Lawrence O'Toole, associate vice president of strategy at MEDITECH. "MEDITECH is proud to partner with CommonWell Health Alliance in providing our customers access to the CommonWell network, enabling faster and simpler exchange of protected health data across the care continuum."

Provider usability of CommonWell services is crucial, and MEDITECH is working closely with Alliance members to ensure its services will seamlessly weave into providers' and administrators' workflows. In addition, by leveraging its work with the Argonaut Project, MEDITECH will be among the first members in the Alliance to deploy the Argonaut Project's FHIR specifications to customers, including Find Document References and Retrieve Document resources, opening the door for more comprehensive sharing of discrete segments of data in the future.

In less than four years, CommonWell went from having seven founding members to more than 60 and growing. In December 2016, CommonWell and Carequality announced they will interoperate; the two organizations collectively represent more than 90 percent of the acute EHR market1 and nearly 60 percent of the ambulatory EHR market2. With connectivity across CommonWell and through the planned CommonWell connection with Carequality implementers, MEDITECH customers will be able to take advantage of expansive exchange avenues; avenues which greatly reduce the pressure and cost burdens to rip and replace systems that are providing benefit.

Today, CommonWell services are live at more than 5,000 provider sites in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Together, MEDITECH and vendors across the industry are breaking down barriers that have stood in the way of efficient data exchange and achieving cross-vendor interoperability.

"CommonWell is excited to work with MEDITECH and other members as we continue to strive towards a reality in which there are no gaps in access and availability of patient data," said Jitin Asnaani, executive director of CommonWell Health Alliance. "MEDITECH's intention to deploy our services will help ensure we move even closer to that reality."

Rural hospital in Southwest Georgia aims to provide superior quality of care to community with state-of-the-art EHR

"Across the board, clinicians and leadership at Colquitt Regional Medical Center are realizing care efficiencies and streamlined processes since going LIVE with MEDITECH's fully-integrated 6.1 Electronic Health Record (EHR) in the Summer of 2016. In addition, Colquitt Regional recently signed for MEDITECH's Web Ambulatory solution.

"With MEDITECH's integrated EHR, physicians are treating patients seamlessly across the continuum. Now that we're implementing Web Ambulatory, we'll be covering an even larger population of patients in our county and surrounding areas," Colquitt Regional Chief Information Officer, Bill Bishop said.

Located in Colquitt County in the town of Moultrie, Ga., the 151-bed medical center is known in the community for its dedication to providing exceptional and compassionate patient care to the approximately 15,600 residents in Moultrieand 40,100 in Colquitt County.

"We've noticed quicker access to patient information. Our ability to capture data from multiple points of care has greatly improved and in turn has improved the continuity of care," Chief Nursing Officer at Colquitt Regional, Dena Zinker said." Our EHR is fully-integrated and information is readily available from other departments—so now clinical staff and patients don't have to wait, resulting in higher patient satisfaction and more engagement at the patient's bedside."

There are multiple benefits to having an integrated EHR, from physicians to nurses to lab to business administration, data flows seamlessly between departments. In one year since go-LIVE, Accounts Receivable (AR) days have dropped from 46 to 41, and are expected to continue to drop. Colquitt Regional staff have also reported time savings for both discharge and admission processes, with the average door to provider wait time being less than 20 minutes. In addition, care providers have reported improved flow of information with safer care transitions.

"We looked at a lot of systems from high-end to lower end, I must admit that MEDITECH has delivered on all the promises they made. When I go back and track all the things that MEDITECH said they would do and what they actually delivered, I can put a checkmark alongside all of them," President and CEO at Colquitt Regional, Jim Matney said. "Our community of patients greatly benefit from this technology—the biggest patient advantage being the fact that there is one patient record. Patients may be seen in the acute setting and then follow up in the doctor's office or with home care services."

Colquitt Regional recently received an "A" Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group, naming them as one of the safest hospitals in the Nation for the sixth time in a row.

"Colquitt Regional's commitment to their patients and community is evident in the services they provide and the technology they invest in to deliver the best care possible," Associate Vice President of Marketing at MEDITECH, Christine Parent said. "MEDITECH is pleased to continue working with Colquitt Regional toward improved patient safety and a higher quality of care for the residents of Colquitt County."

Steward Health Care System announces eight additional hospitals will implement MEDITECH's Web-based Enterprise Health Record (EHR). The move to MEDITECH's Web EHR goes hand-in-hand with the health system's recent expansion to new states.

A MEDITECH customer for 19 years, the implementation of the Web EHR extends MEDITECH's presence within the Steward Health Care system to include Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida by 2018.

"Steward is committed to providing world class care in a more coordinated, efficient manner in the communities where our patients live," Steward Health Care System Chief Information Officer, Julie Berry said. "Expanding our MEDITECH EHR throughout the organization was a key component in moving us toward a more integrated healthcare delivery."

The decision to move forward with MEDITECH's new Web EHR is rooted in Steward's organizational philosophy of investing in the latest and highly innovative EHR as a monumental step to enhance patient care and safety. As an integrated, cost-effective accountable care organization and a physician led healthcare organization with a rapidly expanding physician network and 36 hospital campuses, MEDITECH's clinically sophisticated, highly-integrated EHR will help to progress their vision of equipping clinicians with the latest tools, workflows, and protocols for greater efficiency.

"It's exciting to be deploying solutions built for the web to aid in improving quality and population health, while continuing to drive costs down," Berry said. "Leveraging MEDITECH's innovative Web EHR to help navigate an ever-changing climate was a vital part of our decision to move forward with MEDITECH."

Building upon a successful platform and vendor relationship, Steward recognized MEDITECH as a trusted EHR source for the newly acquired eight sites. While Steward values its success with MEDITECH's legacy platforms, the multi-faceted health system was intrigued by the innovative technology and structure of the new web platform, and how it could help them achieve their various IT goals.

"MEDITECH is proud of our commitment to providing high-quality solutions that are rich in functionality and sophistication at a sustainable price," MEDITECH Executive Vice President, Helen Waters said. "MEDITECH values our long term relationship with Steward Health Care and we're pleased to have them continue to transform care across North America in the ambulatory and acute environment with MEDITECH's modern web solution."

Ohio healthcare system benefiting from the mobility, intuitiveness, and flexibility of MEDITECH's Web EHR across the entire continuum

Firelands Regional Medical Center (Sandusky, Ohio), has gone LIVE with MEDITECH's Web Enterprise Health Record (EHR). The contemporary EHR spans across the entire continuum, including clinical, ancillary, billing, patient portal, and more.

After evaluating its best of breed vendor approach, Firelands decided to move towards a one patient, one record strategy with MEDITECH's Web EHR to improve care coordination, also citing mobility, intuitiveness, and flexibility as deciding factors. The clinically-integrated EHR is unifying care teams across the 400-bed hospital, which is comprised of 250 physicians across 35 different specialties and over 2,100 hospital staff.

Firelands' physicians expect the MEDITECH implementation will continue to significantly improve care quality and patient engagement.

"The mobility of MEDITECH's Web EHR is having a transformational impact on how I deliver care, and is delivering a new paradigm in physicians' experience with EHRs," Patrick Tupa, DO, emergency physician at Firelands Regional Medical Center said. "I now have the ability to interact with patients one-on-one in the room with a tablet. Patients have been impressed and like to see technology working for them."

Additionally, Firelands has leveraged MEDITECH's integrated Oncology solution to centralize the tools physicians need to manage lengthy treatment plans and ensure safe, coordinated care. Firelands' oncologists are committed to helping guide future development efforts by leveraging user-centered design methodologies.

"Firelands really values key partnerships that enable us to improve the health of those we serve," Firelands Regional Medical Center Assistant Vice President of Operations, Denao Ruttino said. "When you have something like an EHR that is so ingrained across the organization, we find it critical to have an innovative, humble vendor partner that cares enough to listen to us and also nimble enough to deliver. From our perspective, MEDITECH delivers."

Firelands demonstrates a long-standing record as a nationally recognized hospital, with distinctions including Healthgrades 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award™, Healthgrades America's 100 Best for Spine Surgery™ six years in a row (2013-2018), and America's 100 Best for Orthopedic Surgery™ two years in a row (2017-2018).

"Firelands is a progressive healthcare organization that is harnessing the value and power of the MEDITECH Web EHR to achieve optimal clinical outcomes," Helen Waters, executive vice president at MEDITECH said. "We are proud to be their long-time partner in providing disruptive, transformational technology to increase physician satisfaction and productivity as well as improve the consumer experience."
